Health Savings Accounts (HSAs)
Frequently asked questions about HSAs.

What expenses are eligible for reimbursement from my HSA?
HSA dollars may be used for qualified medical expenses incurred by the account holder and his or her spouse and dependents. Refer to IRS Section 213 (d) for more information.

In addition to qualified medical expenses, what other insurance premiums may be reimbursed from an HSA?
• COBRA premiums
• Health insurance premiums while receiving unemployment
benefits
• Qualified long-term care premiums*
• Any of the following medicare premiums paid including: Part A-
hospital and inpatient services, Part B- physician and out patient
services, Part C- Medicare HMO and PPO plans, and Part D –
prescription drugs, with the exception of Medicare
supplemental policies paid by individuals ages 65 and over

Can my HSA dollars be used for retirement health care costs?
Yes, only for expenses eligible for reimbursement.

What expenses are NOT eligible for reimbursement from my HSA?
Premiums for Medicare supplemental policies
Expenses covered by another insurance plan
Expenses incurred prior to the date the HSA was established
See IRS Publication 502 for a full list

Can I use my HSA dollars for non-eligible expenses?
Money withdrawn from an HSA account to reimburse non-medical expenses is taxable income to the account holder and subject to a 10% tax penalty, unless over 65, disabled, or upon death.

How do I manage my HSA?
You are the account holder or HSA beneficiary so you may choose when to use your HSA dollars or when not to use your HSA dollars. HSA dollars pay for any eligible expense (it is your responsibility to make sure the expense qualifies). Most often the HSA account holder will pay for out-of-pocket expenses associated with their high deductible health plan with their HSA dollars.

What is coverage gap?
It is the difference between total out-of-pocket expenses associated with your high deductible health plan and your HSA dollars. For example: you have a $2,000 deductible, a $4,000 maximum out-of-pocket, and $2,000 in your HSA account...$4,000 - $2,000 = $2,000. You are financially obligated to pay the difference of $2,000.

When can I start using my HSA dollars?
You can use your HSA dollars immediately following your HSA account activation and once contributions have been made.

*These amounts are adjusted annually for inflation.

How an HSA works
Contact your human resources representative to initiate a Park Community HSA or stop by your local branch. Once the account is established, work with your employer to set up deductions from your paycheck.

Contributions
Much like an IRA, contributions to your HSA are limited by the IRS based on your HDHP coverage and age. See the reverse side for details.

Accessing your account
Park Community’s HSA comes with our Wellness HSA Card, which is a MasterCard® Debit Card. You can use it for qualified medical expenses anywhere MasterCard® is accepted. You may also withdrawal funds at any Park Community branch.
